GAIA – A KI-Based Tutor for Higher Education

Higher education is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Generative AI applications are increasingly being integrated into teaching and learning, with both students and educators leveraging their potential—while simultaneously encountering professional, didactic, and structural limitations. In this context, universities are called upon to actively shape these developments and provide sustainable solutions to support teaching and learning processes.
The GAIA project (Generative Artificial Intelligence Agent) aims to create a personalized, adaptive, and interactive learning support system in the form of a mobile application by integrating cutting-edge approaches in artificial intelligence, such as Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), Generative AI (LLMs), and Knowledge Tracing (which models learning progress). This system is designed to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student body.
GAIA is not intended as a replacement for instructors, but rather as a didactic complement to various teaching and learning formats. The integration is carried out by educators who adapt GAIA to their specific subject matter and learning objectives.
Designed as open-source software, GAIA is intended to be transferable to other universities. The project’s findings will be published to promote knowledge exchange and collaboration within higher education
