Climate Change Adaptation: Enlight Global Engagement Module in Goettingen
No. 25 - 17.05.2022
"Climate Change Adaptation" - this is the topic on which students from the nine universities in the Enlight network met in Göttingen at the end of April 2022. In three interdisciplinary, intercultural groups of three to four students each, they worked together on their projects on the topic and learned with and from each other from different professional cultural perspectives. In preparation, they had initially met virtually since March.
The Enlight network brings together students from the nine universities of Göttingen, Ghent, Groningen, Uppsala and Tartu, the University of the Basque Country, the Universities of Bordeaux and Galway and Comenius University Bratislava to build global competencies in intercultural, interdisciplinary teams and to work on complex issues related to sustainability from different European perspectives.
The Global Engagement Module supports students from different subjects and from different universities in the network to acquire global competences. Based on topics that the Enlight network is working on, such as Health and Well-being, Digital Revolution and Impact of Digitization, Climate Change, Energy and Circular Economy, and Equity, students work on issues around current global challenges on these topics in seminars.
The students in Göttingen received expert input for the collaboration on the topic through a lecture and exchange by and with Professor Elfriede Hermann, Institute for Ethnology at the University of Göttingen. Karina Schell, Climate Adaptation Officer, City of Göttingen, and Bianca Burger from the "Göttinger Entsorgungsbetriebe" provided insights into the climate adaptation measures of the City of Göttingen. Tanja Wehr from Sketchnotelovers, an expert in knowledge transfer, worked with the students on the topic of visualisation and communication of complex issues. The acquisition of competences in the context of Global Engagement was supported and promoted through reflection and feedback sessions by the GEM Coaches Team of the University of Göttingen, Alexandra Schreiber, Alexandra Vogel and Leon-Fabian Caspari. "A great way to challenge yourself and gain new global perspectives" was how one student summed up her experience towards the end of the week.
The results of the cooperation were finally presented to an audience of experts, students and employees of the University of Göttingen as well as a team of teachers from the Enlight partner university Groningen in the "Alte Mensa" event centre of the University of Göttingen and accompanied by an interactive question and answer session.
