Classical Philology (sometimes also referred to as “Classics”) comprises the study of the so-called “classical” languages Latin (Latin Philology) and Greek (Greek Philology), which can be studied either jointly or independently. Its subject matter is the literary heritage of Greco-Roman antiquity, that is, the period from approximately 800 BC to AD 600.

The Seminar for Classical Philology at the Faculty of Humanities of Georg-August University Göttingen looks back on a long tradition: its establishment dates to 1734, that is, three years before the official founding of the Georgia Augusta in 1737. The Göttingen Seminar for Classical Philology has been shaped, among others, by the work of outstanding scholars such as Johann Matthias Gesner, Christian Gottlob Heyne, Karl Otfried Müller, Friedrich Leo, Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, Konrat Ziegler, and Kurt Latte.
