Mathematical Summer Course
The Mathematical Summer Course is suitable both for students looking to reduce their first-semester workload by taking an exam early and for those eager to begin their studies ahead of the official term start in October.
Mathematical Summer Course
In summer 2025, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science will once again offer an opportunity to gain initial insight into university-level mathematics and, if desired, to earn credits before the official start of the semester.
- The Mathematical Summer Course will be held on campus.
- The course covers Differential and Integral Calculus I. and is taught by Prof Dr. Ralf Meyer.
- The course is expected to take place as a block course from August 5 to September 25, 2025.
- The lectures are probably taking place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from approximately 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
- Small group exercises take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. A tutorial session is held on Wednesday afternoons.
- The organization of the small group sessions will happen in the week starting August 5, 2025, through the StudIP platform.
- Further information regarding the meeting point on August 5, 2025, will be provided in the StudIP group.
- The exam will take place on November 7, 2025.
Those who successfully pass the exam in October can have this achievement recognized at the University of Göttingen for the Mathematics degree program (Bachelor of Science or the two-subject Bachelor), the Bachelor's program in Mathematical Data Science, or the key competency area in all degree programs.
Registration for the Mathematical Summer Course
School students (registration deadline: 14.07.2025)
School students who will graduate from school in 2026 at the earliest must enrol as part of the early study programme in order to participate in the Mathematical Summer Course:
Please read all in the information in the document.
Registration for early students in summer semester 2025.
Guest students (registration deadline: 17.7.25)
Anyone who graduates/graduated from school in 2025 or earlier must enrol as a guest student. This also applies if you will be officially enrolled at the time of the exam in October. For the months of August and September, you must enrol as a guest student in order to be allowed to take part in the Mathematical Summer Course.
Please follow the instructions in this document to obtain guest student status for the Summer Course: Registration for guest students in summer semester 2025
Students already enrolled (registration deadline: 4.8.2025)
Students who are enrolled at the University of Göttingen for the summer semester 2025 should register exclusively via StudIP. Please search for "Sommerstudium" under Summer Semester 2025. An additional registration via e-mail is not necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
In general, at the University of Göttingen you can have the Mathematical Summer Course credited as part of the so-called key competencies in all degree programmes that provide for such competencies. In some degree programmes it is even better: In the single and double Bachelor's degree programme
Mathematics and in the Bachelor's degree programme Mathematical Data Science, the Mathematical Summer Course counts as an Analysis 1 module and thus replaces one of the two main mathematical lectures, which are usually taken in the first semester..
There is a package solution for the Bachelor's degree programme in Physics: you can replace the lectures ‘Mathematics for Physics Students 1 and 2’ with the mathematics lectures ‘Diff 1’ and ‘Diff 2’ as well as ‘AGLA 1’. However, this is only possible as a package, i.e. if you want to replace the modules, you must include all three maths lectures. There is a similar rule in Computer Science.
Yes, but as for all those who want to start their studies in October, it is important that you register as a guest student. This is possible in most cases without any problems; you can download a corresponding form from the Mathematical Summer Course website (see above) - on this you will find further instructions on what to do. If you are already registered at another university, please clarify your registration with us in advance.
The Mathematical Summer Course is free of charge for school students.
If you are no longer at a school but would like to start a degree programme in October, for example after completing your Abitur, you must register as a guest student. A fee of 75 euros will be charged, which you should have paid before the summer programme (more information on the registration form).
If you are already enrolled in a higher semester in Göttingen and have therefore already paid the regular fee, you do not have to register as a guest student and do not have to pay an additional fee.
In general, attendance is not compulsory for mathematics lectures at the University of Göttingen, and this is also the case here. The only exception to this is for school students: in consultation with their school, they can have the lecture recognised as a substitute for school lessons when registering, and in this case a written excuse must be submitted in case of non-attendance, as in school.
We have established a regulation that allows guest students to count the exam as a one-time free attempt. This means the exam will not count toward the number of attempts allowed to pass the lecture "Diff 1" for this one time. If you pass the summer session exam, you can even try to improve your grade in a later Diff 1 exam.
For students in early study programs, a failed attempt also does not count toward a later degree program. However, a passed exam can be credited in a future study program.
However, if you are already regularly enrolled in Göttingen, for example because you are using the Mathematical Summer Course to catch up on your Diff 1 certificate in the second or fourth semester, the exam will count as a regular attempt.
