Financing your Stay
International scientists and scholars who come to Germany for research purposes are typically required to provide proof of financial security to obtain a visa and residence permit in Göttingen. The German government estimates that you will need at least €950 € per month, and another €300 per month for accompanying spouses, and €250 per child. You will need to prove that you have access to at least this amount per month in order to demonstrate that you will have enough to take care of yourself properly. You can provide proof of funding in various ways. If you have an employment contract in Göttingen, your living expenses are considered adequately covered if your net salary is high enough. In most cases, you will not sign the employment contract until you arrive in Göttingen. You will receive a “commitment of employment” (“Beschäftigungszusage”) prior to your arrival, which you can submit as proof that your living expenses are covered. A grant or scholarship can cover your living expenses if the monthly instalments are sufficient. More information about funding opportunities can be found here: Particularly for short research stays, you can provide the financing yourself. In this case, you must provide evidence of cash funds in the required amount (corresponding to the length of your stay) usually in the form of bank statements. The German embassy or consulate may also require you to set up a “blocked account” (Sperrkonto). You can also have your living expenses guaranteed by someone living in Germany who has sufficient financial means. They sign a declaration to this effect before the German authorities. This is not a common approach for researchers. If you need further information, please contact the Welcome Centre.
