Law - Doctoral Studies
Who is eligible for doctoral studies at the faculty of law of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen?
The usual prerequisite is a degree in law, having passed the first examination in law with honours ("fully satisfactory") or better.
If you fulfill these requirements you can apply online:
Interne Bewerber/innen (bei Antragstellung in Göttingen eingeschrieben)
Externe Bewerber/innen (nicht an der Universität Göttingen immatrikuliert)
External applicants (not enrolled at the University of Göttingen)
Graduates, who do not fulfill the requiremens, might apply for the following exemptions:
- Exemption from honours law degree: § 3 (2) Doctoral Regulations
- Application Letter Antrag auf Befreiung vom Prädikatsexamen
- Form „Attachment to application“ (PDF)
- Confirmation of Supervisor
- Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (Abiturzeugnis/Secondary School degree)
- Certificate of first examination in law<
- Seminar grades if available.
- Application regarding § 4 (1) Doctoral Regulations: A degree from another faculty at Master level with honours (equivalent to the grade "fully satisfactory")

The applications must be addressed to the Faculty Council who meets three times during the lecture period of each semester. The deadline for the submission of your application is a week before the meeting

Structured doctoral studies
The faculty of law, social sciences and economic faculty, as well as the faculty of agricultural sciences and the faculty for forestry and forest ecology are founding members of the Göttinger Graduiertenschule Gesellschaftswissenschaften (GGG), combining graduate training of the five faculties to permit graduates structured training of high technical quality and excellent support.
The GGG uses the wide technical range of its five founding faculties to make the doctoral students a wide offer of methods and interdisciplinary approaches, as well as a great number of disciplinary intensification options. One of these offers is the annual method week.
Within the GGG, there is the option of achieving one's doctorate in the doctoral course of studies Biodiversity and society" and the graduate college 1507 "Expert cultures of the 12th to 16th century".
