Bariri (Sulawesi, Indonesia)

Location Temperature (annual mean) Precipitation (annual) Elevation above sea level Ecosystem
Central Sulawesi, Indonesia 19.6°C 2700 mm 450 m Highland rainforest

The Bariri measurement station was located in a tropical highland rainforest in the Lore Lindu National Park on Sulawesi, Indonesia. The site was situated at 1416 m above sea level on gently sloping terrain with a slope of up to 7%. The climate was tropical-humid with a mean annual temperature of 19.6°C and a mean annual precipitation of 2700 mm.

The rainforest was characterised by high species diversity of approximately 88 tree species per hectare. Dominant tree species were Castanopsis acuminatissima (29%), Canarium vulgare Lenh. (18%), and various fig species (Ficus spec., 9.5%). The mean tree height was 33 m. The Leaf Area Index (LAI) was approximately 7 m2 m-2.

From 2003 to 2017, CO2 and water exchange between the forest and the atmosphere was measured using the eddy covariance method from a 70 m tall measurement tower. In addition, meteorological measurements were carried out.
