Study abroad
Semester abroad as part of the Master's in Applied Statistics
Research and planning
Various exchange programmes are available if you would like to spend a semester abroad.
- Are you planning to spend a semester abroad in Europe? Apply via the Erasmus+ programme: Students of the MSc in Applied Statistics have previously travelled to Prague, Ljubljana and Groningen. There is also an exchange programme with the Master's programme ‘Statistics and Technologies for Data Analysis’ at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Naples (Italy).
- Application via the worldwide WiWi faculty programme: For instance, you could apply to spend a semester studying abroad at the University of Mississippi in the USA. If you are interested in economics modules, we can also recommend Thammasat University in Bangkok.
- Application via the university-wide Global Exchange Programme: This programme involves cross-faculty collaborations coordinated by the International Office (Göttingen International) at the University of Göttingen. If you are interested in this programme, please research in advance whether there are modules available at your desired university that are suitable for your studies and can be credited towards your degree. You can do exchange semesters, for example, at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), the University of Technology Sydney or one of the South Korean partner universities.
- Please also pay attention to the semester dates of the partner universities. These may differ significantly from those at the University of Göttingen.
- Information on the different application deadlines can be found on the websites of the relevant programmes.
Course selection and recognition
If you spend a semester abroad at one of our partner universities, you can choose modules primarily from their business and economics programmes.
If you are interested in taking modules from other faculties, such as Computer Science, you can contact the relevant programme coordinators to ask if this is possible. However, in the Erasmus+ programme, it is important that at least 60 per cent of the modules are completed at the Faculty of Business and Economics.
If you take a module during your semester abroad that largely corresponds to a module in Göttingen in terms of its content and scope, it may be recognised on a one-to-one basis. Modules completed during your semester abroad may also be recognised as part of the compulsory or elective components of your degree programme, provided they are relevant to your subject.
Once you have chosen the modules you wish to take during your semester abroad, you can submit a recognition application to the Faculty's Study Abroad Advisory Service. You will then receive feedback on how your chosen courses can be recognised. This gives you the opportunity to adjust your course selection if necessary. You can also check the FlexStat recognition database to see which courses have already been recognised.
Language
Most partner universities offer the option of studying in English. Typically, at least some courses for international exchange students are taught in English.
However, there are also universities where you can only study in the local language. This is primarily the case in Latin America and South America, as well as at some universities in Italy, Spain and France. In these cases, you will always need a suitable language certificate. However, the requirements vary from country to country.
Information on the requirements you need to fulfil to study at your chosen university can be found on the respective programme websites.
Internship abroad
- Information on voluntary internships abroad can be found here.
- You can receive credit for voluntary internships abroad as part of your degree programme.
