Career Paths in Science Management

As an alternative to an academic career, the field of "Science Management" at the University of Göttingen offers diverse opportunities to remain actively involved in the academic environment. Individuals with strong organizational skills, effective communication abilities, social proficiency, keen analytical capacity, and resilience can make a significant impact in the domain of science management at the University of Göttingen. Serving as a crucial link at the intersection of academia and administration, science managers play a vital role by ensuring smooth operations through a well-informed understanding of administrative processes and key contacts.
Organisationally, employees in science management work in both decentralized units (deaneries, institutes, collaborative entities such as centres, research consortia, or graduate schools) and central units (departments, support offices). In these capacities, they take on roles ranging from administrative, coordinating, and managing positions to executive and leadership roles.
Two fields of activity have already been delineated through guidelines, aiming to enhance the professionalization of personnel selection and development for these positions: functional roles with an academic profile and coordination positions within DFG-funded Research Units. These concepts facilitate the sustainable staffing of these positions with highly qualified and experienced individuals.
