Aerodynamics

Prof. Dr. Andreas Dillmann

Aerodynamics is the sub-field of fluid mechanics studying the dynamical behaviour of bodies within a flow. It is concerned with the physical mechanisms that for example let aeroplanes, birds and insects fly, that allow the sails of a boat or the wings of a bird create propulsion, or that cause the aerodynamic resistance of a vehicle. Due to the high Reynolds numbers and the associated presence of turbulence the numerical tractability of the Navier-Stokes-equations describing these phenomena is strongly restricted. Therefore aerodynamics continues to rely heavily on experiments in which state of the art imaging technologies play a crucial role.
