Art exhibition "Home Behind" at Kulturwissenschaftliches Zentrum opens 5 June
What does it mean to flee? What would you grab to take with you if you suddenly had to leave your home behind? Three artists, who themselves fled Ukraine due to the war and currently live in Kassel, focus on people and their stories in their work. The exhibition "Home Behind" can be seen from 5 June to 31 July 2023 in the foyer of the Kulturwissenschaftliches Zentrum (KWZ) at the University of Göttingen, Heinrich Düker Weg 14. It will open on Monday 5 June at 17:00.
A whole life in a carrier bag: photographer Alina Zakharchuk photographed refugees from Ukraine with an object that they rescued that was valuable to them. The exhibition features some of her photos and the stories of the people pictured. The illustrator and sculptor Olena Yushchenko deals with the suffering of children. In her series of drawings entitled "Children of War", she tells the story of children seeking shelter from the dangerous world of adults in the wildness of nature. The artist and sculptor Emil Mamedov deals with the theme of darkness. He explores the question of what life in darkened Ukrainian cities does to people.
The exhibition was created as part of the "Welcome" project for Ukrainian refugees at the Sozialer Friedensdienst Kassel. Maria Radzikhovskiy, Project Manager and Curator of the exhibition, Elena Padva, Director of the Sara Nussbaum Zentrum für Jüdisches Leben, which is a partner in this project, as well as Professor Uwe Junghanns, Director of the Section for Slavic Linguistics at the University of Göttingen, will speak at the opening of the exhibition.
