Project: BEFmate (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning across marine and terrestrial ecosystems)

I am a marine biologist with a strong background in benthic ecology and biogeochemistry. I have integrated different areas of research to understand general patterns of changes observed recently in benthic marine environments as a consequence of climate change. Within the BEFmate project, we establish a field experiment in the coastal mudflat habitat of the North Sea. The aim of this study is to understand the impacts of short- and long-term environmental changes on the marine and terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The conducted studies focus on interaction, adaption and evolution of micro- and meiofauna, energy- and matterflux, and biogeochemical dynamic.

The following four research questions are in focus of interest:

    1) What conditions prevail in the natural Wadden Sea habitat?
    2) Which processes influence the natural marine and terrestrial biodiversity?
    3) How does biodiversity respond to local, regional and global climate changes and human impacts?
    4) Does changing biodiversity in benthic environments influence ecosystem functioning?
