Dr. Ahmed Siddig

Visiting Scholar (Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation) in the Junior Research Group on Landscape Resilience

Dr. Ahmed Siddig is an applied ecologist and Associate Professor at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. He was a Charles Bullard Research Fellow at Harvard Forest, Harvard University, from 2023 to 2026. Since July 2026, he has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Göttingen, hosted by the Junior Research Group on Landscape Resilience at the Centre for Biodiversity and Sustainable Land Use (CBL), under the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Philipp Schwartz Initiative for scholars at risk.

His research investigates the impacts of environmental changes—including conflict, climate change, and land-use change—on biodiversity and ecosystem services across North American and African ecosystems, spanning wetlands, drylands, savannas, and forests. He combines empirical field observations, experiments, and modeling methods to address pressing ecological questions in data-deficient regions.

Dr. Siddig holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Conservation from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2015) and has held postdoctoral positions at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and the University of Freiburg, Germany. He has over 30 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Ecosphere, Forests, Ecological Indicators, and Remote Sensing, and has delivered more than 25 invited talks worldwide.

Beyond his academic work, he serves as an expert consultant to UN agencies and national development projects in Sudan. He is an elected member of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA - see his AGYA profile) and serves on the Capacity Building Task Force of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
