Abstract:Starting from the idea of hierarchies of oppression and its critique by Audre Lorde, this talk will examine some cases where ethnic, racial, sexual and national differences were instrumentally embraced by transnational institutions: the art world and tourism (specifically, Chinese artists in California, and gay tourism in non-Western countries).
The key concepts of cultural capital and otherness will be used to describe how localism and cosmopolitanism, masculinity and femininity, tradition and innovation are used to create hierarchies of visibility, specifically in the promotion of Asian art, and its promotion in cultural venues. The talk illustrates how interconnected dynamics of consuming otherness, and pitching one difference against another have negative effects for local, female artists and subjects who are forgotten and rendered invisible while their differences are celebrated.
